  7. "What to Expect While Expecting" book question?

    August 29, 2010, 1:39 am
Usually I'm a self-declared arch-enemy of medical books that are written by non-healthcare professionals. I recently came across a question on Y!A that had a girl wondering if a Frappachino Mocha was a good idea to indulge in while pregnant. In my Maternity/Peds classes, a Nurse Midwife with a PhEd in Neonatal Studies shook her finger at us and warned "Caffiene increases your chances of miscarraige by up to 60%, and best case scenario will adversely affect the developing fetal heart" Some helpful wag who got Best Answer (picture me resting my face in my hand) suggested "GO RIGHT TO STARBUCKS AND GET THAT DRINK, because WTEWE says that 4 cups of regular coffee is NO PROBLEM!" I couldn't believe that a pregnancy book could say such things and still be on the best seller list, much less, for sale in reputable bookstores, so I took the time to find it and read it cover to cover. To my relief, the "Answerer" was FOS, not the book. I found this passage= reading chapter 4 "The Best-Odds Diet": "Every bite counts. You've got only nine months of meals and snacks with which to give your baby the best possible start in life. Make every one of them count. Before you close your mouth on a forkful of food, consider, 'is this the best bite I can give my baby?' If it will benefit your baby, chew away. If it'll only benefit your sweet tooth or appease your appetite, put your fork down." My question is, ISN'T THAT pretty cut and dry?

I know for a fact that they did not have math books like this when I was a kid. If they had existed, I might have done a whole lot better in school.
